{"id":7410,"date":"2026-03-28T15:08:54","date_gmt":"2026-03-28T13:08:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iidh.org\/speech-by-emmanuel-decaux-inauguration-of-the-rene-cassin-room-27-march-2026\/"},"modified":"2026-03-28T15:08:54","modified_gmt":"2026-03-28T13:08:54","slug":"speech-by-emmanuel-decaux-inauguration-of-the-rene-cassin-room-27-march-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iidh.org\/en\/speech-by-emmanuel-decaux-inauguration-of-the-rene-cassin-room-27-march-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"Speech by Emmanuel Decaux \u2013 Inauguration of the Ren\u00e9 Cassin Room (27 March 2026)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the European Court of Human Rights, a \u201cRen\u00e9 Cassin\u201d room was inaugurated on 26 March 2026, in the presence of Mr Mattias Guyomar, President of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.echr.coe.int\/documents\/d\/echr\/speech-20260410-guyomar-exhibition-cassin-bnu-fra\">European Court of Human Rights<\/a>, and Mr Laurent Fabius, former Prime Minister.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On this occasion, Emmanuel Decaux, President of the Ren\u00e9 Cassin Foundation, delivered a speech paying tribute to one of the founding figures of human rights, while highlighting the deep ties between Ren\u00e9 Cassin and Strasbourg. In particular, he recalled Cassin\u2019s Alsatian roots, his early commitment to \u201cpeace through law\u201d, his role alongside General de Gaulle, as well as his decisive contribution to the choice of Strasbourg as the seat of the Court, a symbol of European reconciliation. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The speech also underlined Cassin\u2019s institutional legacy through the creation, in 1969, of the International Institute of Human Rights, and reaffirmed the Foundation\u2019s commitment to the values enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights.
