The René Cassin Foundation – International Institute of Human Rights is pleased to announce the publication of René Cassin: Vocación por el constitucionalismo universal, written by Luis Jimena Quesada, Professor at the University of Valencia, Spain, and Secretary-General of the René Cassin Foundation – International Institute of Human Rights. The book is published by Editorial Tirant lo Blanch.
This is the first book in Spanish devoted to the life and work of René Cassin. Published on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of his passing, the volume revisits the exceptional legacy of one of the leading figures behind the drafting of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 1968, and founder of the International Institute of Human Rights in 1969.
Through the notion of “universal constitutionalism”, Luis Jimena Quesada offers an in-depth reflection on the continuing relevance of René Cassin’s legacy at a time when the international order is undergoing major transformations, marked by challenges to multilateralism, the rise of populism, the climate emergency, forced human mobility, and the new realities of algorithmic globalisation.
The book includes an introductory contribution by Emmanuel Decaux and Sébastien Touzé, respectively President and Director of the René Cassin Foundation – International Institute of Human Rights, as well as a foreword by Fabian Salvioli, former United Nations Special Rapporteur on the promotion of truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence.
By highlighting René Cassin’s decisive role in the emergence and consolidation of international human rights law, this publication also recalls the importance he attached to education in democracy and human rights, with a view to shaping new generations of global citizens committed to peace through law.
