General course in International Humanitarian Law 2026

In a world marked by the multiplication and persistence of armed conflicts, with around 130 conflicts currently ongoing — a number that has more than doubled over the past 15 years — civilian populations are the first to suffer, while new actors and emerging technologies continue to reshape the conduct of hostilities. In this context, International Humanitarian Law is facing more challenges than ever before.

More than ever, it is essential to examine the foundations and scope of application of international humanitarian law in light of the evolving nature of contemporary armed conflicts. The protection of civilians, civilian property and persons deprived of liberty, as well as the rules governing the conduct of hostilities and the status of fighters, are being challenged by the urbanisation of warfare and the emergence of new military technologies. In this context, the effectiveness of international humanitarian law depends both on the clarity of its norms and on their concrete implementation, particularly with regard to humanitarian assistance.

These pressing questions call for deeper reflection on the essential role of IHL. To this end, the René Cassin Foundation is organizing an online training course on International Humanitarian Law.

The training will take place online from March 23 to 27, 2026, with daily two and an half hour sessions from 3:30 pm to 6:00 pm (CET). The course will only be held in English and will bring together experts.
